Changes Ahead for iTunes

At the MacWord Conference & Expo this world, it was revealed that the $0.99-fits-all pricing for iTunes will be changed to a new 3-tier pricing system, starting in April.

The new releases and more popular songs will cost $1.29 but you might be able to find your favorite old Journey song for a mere $0.69. Maybe that’s a bad example, I mean who doesn’t have the Journey greatest hits album? In any event, there will still be some songs available for the regular $0.99 pricing, although there’s no indication as to how that differentiation will be made.

Also, tiered pricing allows experimenting with bundle packs. For example – a popular title track may be matched with a less popular song off the same album and a ringtone. No estimated pricing has been released for this yet.

Lastly,  users will no longer be subjected to DRM (digital rights management) restrictions, which limited the amount of devices a user could download their purchased songs on. This makes many users very happy but it will cost an additional amount to remove those restrictions from already purchased music.
