National Hands-Free Ban for Drivers Proposed by NCS

The NCS, National Safety Council, has recently proposed a ban on all cell phone usage while driving, including hands free devices. Only 6 states currently have a law against hand-held cell phone use in the car, including us here in Connecticut. The NCS is looking to make this a unanimous ruling across the nation.

They argue that if you are doing anything, besides driving, then you are distracted and thus a danger on the road.  While no one argues that texting and talking on a hand-held device is a distraction, it is still possible to have a safe conversation in the car. Bluetooth ear pieces are probably the most popular way to conduct business calls while on the go. Newer cars have a Bluetooth “mode” that allows drivers to carry on a conversation through the speakers of the stereo. (Editors note – best invention ever!)

What do you think? Is the NCS overreacting? Is it possible to conduct business in this day and age without mobile access to a telephone?

Even the NCS admitted that this proposition would take a long time to implement, if full implementation occurs at all.  No need to worry yet but please make sure to travel safely with your hands-free device.
