Fun with Technology and Zombies

Everyday, new technology allows us to do things we never thought possible and probably makes the previous generation have a headache. My mother doesn’t understand why anyone would need a level on their iPhone and don’t get me started on watching my husband explain an iPod to his 85 year old grandmother.

But along with the fun stuff, technology has also allowed us to feel safer. Whether it’s tracking for a cell phone, Mobile Witness or those electronic road signs that issue Amber Alerts and traffic reports.

The one thing all technology has in common is hackers. Some try to steal information for their own personal gain, some send spam blasts just to make life difficult for their victim…and some just do it for fun.

Hackers in three states have begun a prank that isn’t leaving officials laughing, by breaking into these electric road signs and displaying messages such as “Zombies in Area! Run!” and “Raptors Ahead – Use Caution.”

The pranksters have not been caught yet and no one is entirely sure how it even happened. However, there is a tutorial on jalopnik.com, titled “How to Hack an Electronic Road Sign“, so who knows what kind of information is out there.

While some are amused, most officials are concerned because the Zombie message actually replaced a necessary message about guardrails going up.
