Thanks Alistair -

You're right, out of warranty computers do not necessarily need to be replaced.

However, there are important factors that come into play that don't necessarily exist with other appliances.

For instance, your refrigerator doesn't make you money, as your PC is a business tool.

My clients are already asking for a faster computer in year 2 - so by the time year 3 comes around (average warranty time), when it goes out of warranty, they want a faster PC.

Also - finding replacement parts for some computer models is difficult after the warranty period is expired.

My job is to make sure the technology continues to run - it's easier to orchestrate this when the manufacturer is handling the hardware.

Very informative article, but I do have to comment on what you said here:

"It’s true some computers come with a 1-year warranty, and you could argue that it’s cheap enough that you could dispose if something goes wrong, but who wants to replace their PC every year?"

Just because a computer is out of warranty doesn't make it necessary to be replaced. If that were the case, we would replace all appliances and electronics the same way! For instance, imagine replacing your refrigerator or cell phone as soon as the warranty is up. That would certainly make manufacturers happy!

I don't know which is worse: The fact that the mother introduced the iPad *before* magazines or lets her 1-year-old look at fashion magazines (not exactly what she should be looking at, don't you think?).

I think some of the ones mentioned in the "There’s more…" section of that article are good to think about, too. GreenCine especially, if you're a lover of indie films.

Also, wanted to let you know that the "Redbox" link in the NIW article is missing the http:// before the URL. :^)

When something new is 10% of the original cost for the product, yes, it most definitely is too good to be true. I'm surprised those people who ordered it didn't realize it was a typo (but I'm more surprised that the third-party seller didn't check it before posting the ad).

I'm thinking the only way you'll buy an iPad for $69 is by getting it from China. Though, even then it would either be a refurbished or knock-off model.

Excellent article!

As I was reading in the beginning of what you usually recommended your customers to do and what you recently came across, I was wondering if you were going to suggest using KeePass. I've been using it for almost 5 years and it works great!

One thing I wanted to mention is regarding the #1 reason. If your browser allows it (such as Firefox and Chrome), you are able to separately drag and drop the username and password directly into the Web page. This is even more secure, since even if there's a keylogging program running it won't see the info.
